Information for Users of the FIRE System
The IRS recently announced that, starting September 26, 2021, users of the Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) platform will have to use a new application procedure to receive Transmitter Control Codes (TCC) . The current application procedure using the Form 4419 will be replaced. To use the new application process, applicants must obtain a Secure Access Account with the IRS. Please find more information here.
Initially, the updated process will only be necessary for new applicants of a TCC and new FIRE users. Existing users are expected to obtain a Secure Access Account and to transition to the new process by late 2022.
Furthermore, in September 2021, the IRS will perform a relevant update of the FIRE system. After this update, to use the FIRE system, the filing information (TCC, EIN and Business Name) must be entered exactly as currently recorded in the FIRE System. Therefore, existing QIs are expected to log in to their FIRE accounts before September 15, 2021, to access the filing information stored under “Send Information Returns” to ensure that it is entered correctly. Furthermore, to prevent problems with the FIRE account after the update, the IRS recommends retaining a record of the information stored in the FIRE system. Please find more information here.
